As winter settles in here in Skandia, I'm beginning to find the time to address the on-going challenge I have of getting a good sounding, dynamically present drum sound on my recordings.
Thanks to Blake@Blacktop Studios, I have on loan a set of Shure drum mikes. I own a mid-70's set of Ludwigs that are a good sounding kit. The challenge is to get that sound to transfer to recordings. (and to brush up my drumming skills to a respectable level)
This past Sunday as temps outside hovered around minus 0 degrees, I felt it was as good a time as any to work on this project. I'm blessed to have a 3 room Sty complex to work in. One of the small side rooms off the main room is close to where I have my gear set up. I set up the drums just inside the door to the left with the stool closest to the door. This allows me to roll the cart I have the Fostex and rack mount gear in, right up next to the stool so I can adjust levels from the set.
After much tweeking I was able to achieve a nice sound in the headset. At the day's end, however, I still wasn't satisfied how the sound was transfering to recording. More time required, but positive progress achieved.
Peace to anyone who passes this way.....Otis
